The province’s pandemic death toll climbed by 14 to 6,032, according to the Health Ministry. Quebec has posted far more COVID-19 deaths than any other province. Six of those deaths were noted in the past 24 hours.
The Institut national de santé publique has calculated the province’s mortality rate of 706 deaths per million population is higher than that of the United States (660 per million).
On Friday, the INSPQ released its latest COVID-19 projections, warning the province’s current pandemic measures were not enough to prevent a spike in hospitalizations that could soar to as many as 125 a day in the Greater Montreal region in December. The INSPQ urged Quebecers to reduce their social contacts by 25 per cent to flatten the curve in the second wave.
On Saturday morning, Health Minister Christian Dubé reacted to the latest COVID-19 update by tweeting Quebecers must “limit (their) number of contacts,” adding “we have the power to break the wave, but we need the co-operation of all Quebecers.”
