Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scoring after United were reduced to 10 men in the second half.
United were the better side before the break, but Bruno Fernandes, Amad and Matheus Cunha all missed good chances, ESPN reported. The match was scoreless at half-time.
Rogers broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. He collected the ball after Romeo Lavia won possession and chipped United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, beIN Sports reported.
The game turned in the 63rd minute when United defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a foul in the penalty area. beIN Sports described it as a second yellow card.
Palmer stepped up a minute later and sent the penalty low toward the bottom-right corner in the 64th minute. Lammens got a touch but could not keep it out, making it 2-0.
ESPN said the 10 men then “crumbled” and that Chelsea wasted several more chances to extend the lead.
The result lifts Chelsea to 16 points from nine games, fourth in the Premier League, according to ESPN’s standings. They lost 2-0 to Tottenham last weekend, when Palmer was sent off.
United have seven points from nine games and sit 16th, one win from nine. The defeat extends their winless run to nine matches and adds pressure on head coach Michael Carrick, whose side were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Oct. 25.
ESPN described United as “tottering on the edge of the relegation zone”. Neither club’s next fixture was confirmed in the match reports reviewed.
