
Canada has logged record-breaking numbers of a deadly variety of group A streptococcus across the country and Ontario — a bacterial infection capable of killing roughly one in ten people impacted, and is one of the most common causes of flesh-eating disease, experts tell the Star.
In a statement to the Star, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed that as of Jan. 9, the National Microbiology Laboratory has received more than 4,600 samples of the bacteria in 2023 — the highest annual total on record.
