It will be Richards’ second time starting this month. The 29-year-old reliever started Sept. 3 against the Pittsburgh Pirates — allowing one hit over two innings in an eventual 4-1 Blue Jays win.
Richards began his career as a starter for the Miami Marlins but hadn’t opened a game before last week since he started four for the Rays in 2020. This season, Richards has a 4.71 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 54 appearances for Toronto.
With Richards starting, the Blue Jays can rest their starters ahead of a crucial five-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays next week.
Catch Sunday’s game against the Rangers at 2:35 p.m. ET on Sportsnet or SN NOW.
