NEWARK, N.J. – Tim Stutzle scored and set up another goal, and Linus Ullmark made 29 saves as the Ottawa Senators beat the New Jersey Devils 4-1 on Monday night.
Shane Pinto, Stephen Halliday and Tyler Kleven also scored for Ottawa (5-1-0), which has won three straight and has five wins in its first six games for the third time in franchise history. Ullmark improved to 5-0-0.
Arseny Gritsyuk scored for New Jersey (2-3-0), which had beaten Vancouver 4-1 on Saturday. Nico Daws stopped 16 shots in goal for the Devils.
Pinto opened the scoring nine seconds into the second period, beating Daws with a wrist shot from the slot on a pass from Michael Amadio. It was Pinto’s first goal of the season.
Halliday made it 2-0 at 8:40 of the second on the power play. Stutzle found him uncovered between the circles after Devils defenceman Brett Pesce fell.
Stutzle added his own goal at 11:10 of the third period, deflecting a shot from the slot that came from the point off the stick of Thomas Chabot, to make it 3-0.
Gritsyuk spoiled the shutout bid with a wrist shot between the circles at 14:59 of the third. New Jersey thought it had cut the deficit earlier when Jesper Boqvist appeared to score at 11:58, but Ottawa successfully challenged for goalie interference and the goal was overturned.
Kleven sealed the win into an empty net at 17:53.
Ottawa played most of the game with five defencemen. Devils forward Anthony Mantha was given a five-minute major for boarding Nikolas Matinpalo at 10:01 of the first period, and Matinpalo suffered an upper-body injury on the play and did not return, NHL.com reported.
The Senators host the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.
