REGINA — Condos, apartments and businesses in Regina can still apply for more than $500,000 in City funding to set up recycling and compost services, the City of Regina said Friday.
The money comes from the City’s Early Adopter Incentive Program. Eligible applicants can be reimbursed for equipment and materials including compost and recycling bins, bathroom hand dryers and signage, according to a City news release. Funding is first come, first served.
“With this much funding still available, it’s the ideal time for eligible organizations to invest in recycling and composting systems,” said Carolyn Kalim, the City’s director of water, waste and environment. She said the funding can offset both capital and operational costs.
Recycling and composting are not mandatory for multi-unit residential properties and businesses today. That changes under updates to the City’s Waste Management Bylaw. Multi-family properties must have a compost service by July 1, 2027. Industrial, commercial and institutional businesses must have multi-stream waste systems, including recycling and compost, by Jan. 1, 2028.
Applications and eligibility details for multi-family properties are at Regina.ca/MultiFamily. Businesses can find theirs at Regina.ca/ICI.
Regina is not the only Canadian city moving on household and building waste. Montreal has been working through its own move to biweekly trash pickup, while Saskatchewan’s capital is also dealing with wind warnings across the south this weekend.
