RALEIGH, N.C. – Pyotr Kochetkov made 26 saves for his second shutout of the season and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets 7-0 on Sunday night.
Kochetkov won his 10th straight game to open the season, a franchise record, at Lenovo Center. He is the third goalie in NHL history to win his first 10 games of a season.
Sean Walker scored twice for Carolina, a short-handed goal at 5:16 of the first period and another at 7:41 of the second. Juuso Valimaki made it 2-0 at 1:55 of the second, and Sebastian Aho scored on the power play 24 seconds later with a backdoor tap-in off a pass from Andrei Svechnikov.
Logan Stankoven scored at 9:09 of the second, Mark Jankowski added a power-play goal at 6:53 of the third and Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored at 8:38 to finish the scoring.
Winnipeg goalie Stuart Skinner was pulled after allowing five goals on 17 shots in just over nine minutes of the second period. Clay Stevenson stopped 13 shots in relief.
“It’s pretty frustrating, pretty embarrassing as an organization,” Jets coach Scott Arniel said.
“It’s just not good enough,” captain Adam Lowry said.
Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said “our goaltender has been the No. 1 reason” for the team’s start.
Winnipeg (4-8-3) has lost nine straight and is 0-7-2 in its past nine games. Carolina improved to 12-2-2 and has won four in a row.
