Canada has ended the gold-medal streak of its biggest rival while ending a drought of its own.
Marie-Philip Poulin scored the overtime winner to give Canada a 3-2 victory over the United States on Tuesday. With the win, Canada has won gold at the Women’s World Hockey Championship for the first time since 2012 and ended a streak of five consecutive gold medals for the Americans.
Brianne Jenner and Jamie Lee Rattray scored two in the second to even the score for the Canadians heading into the third period after Alex Carpenter put the Americans up 2-0 after the first.
Carpenter opened the scoring for the USA at 9:55 of the first period, going whacking home a rebound through the pads of Canadian goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens to open a 1-0 lead.
Carpenter extended the lead with her second of the game 2:40 later on the power play, finding the puck through a crowd of bodies in front and firing it past a screened Desbiens.
Jenner brought the Canadians to within one goal on an early power play, corralling a rebound and slipping it past the outstretched skate of American goaltender Nicole Hensley at 4:13 of the period.
Rattray tied the game at 6:42 of the period, redirecting a waist-high shot from Jocelyne Larocque through the five-hole of Hensley for Canada’s second goal of the period.
More to come.
