Ismael Kone’s World Cup is likely over.
The Canadian midfielder was forced to exit on a stretcher against Qatar on Thursday with what appeared to be a broken leg following a hard challenge.
Assim Mabido took down Kone with a late tackle and received a red card on the play — Qatar’s second send-off of the contest.
Kone has been transported to the hospital with his leg stabilized, per the official broadcast.
Kone started for Canada in the first two games of the World Cup alongside Stephen Eustáquio in the central midfield.
Canada’s team and trainers quickly attended to Kone, and he got a standing ovation from the Vancouver crowd as he was stretchered off. His teammates were visibly shaken by the injury.
Nathan Saliba replaced Kone on the pitch and scored quickly after to extend Canada’s lead to 4-0. He held up Kone’s jersey in his celebration.
