Kiriko Kicks A Bunch Of Heads In Overwatch 2’s Latest Animated Short – Forbes

Published

 on

Blizzard just debuted its latest Overwatch 2 animated short and, boy, is the company’s cinematics team continuing to knock it out of the park with these. The short focuses on Kiriko, the game’s badass new support. While it doesn’t shed a ton of light on her character compared with what we already knew, it’s a gorgeous, affecting short in which Kiriko kicks a whole lot of butt (or, to be more specific, heads).

What we do learn is where the fox mask that Kiriko wears comes from. It’s a gift she receives from the granddaughter of one of her building’s residents while on her way home.

After Kiriko returns to her apartment, she’s confronted by her mother, who wants her to come back home to train some more (Kiriko’s mother also trained Hanzo and Genji). But their reunion is cut short by the Hashimoto clan. Kiriko teleports into action to protect her neighbor and his granddaughter — as well as Kanezaka — from the bad guys.

Kiriko pops a few of her abilities, including her Kitsune Rush Ultimate (with an excellent moment featuring the granddaughter). The short closes out with an emotional conversation between Kiriko and her mother, who slips in a pretty dang funny line right at the end.

It’s a mostly terrific short that showcases the talents of Blizzard’s animators, even if the story is fairly slight. It’s a also little odd that Kiriko’s mother, seemingly a fierce warrior, hangs back and appears to watch the Hashimoto battle through a peephole.

Anyway, this underscores the fact that there absolutely needs to be an animated series based on Overwatch 2. Edgerunners worked wonders for the popularity of Cyberpunk 2077, so an Overwatch Netflix show could help this game out as well.

The short premiered at TwitchCon and it also marked the start of an Overwatch 2 Twitch Drops campaign, through which you can earn a Legendary Kiriko skin for free. More details about that here.

On the downside, Kiriko is not available to all Overwatch 2 players right away. You’ll unlock her immediately if you either:

  1. Came over from Overwatch 1
  2. Buy the Overwatch 2 Watchpoint Pack
  3. Buy the premium Battle Pass

If you’re a new player who doesn’t want to pay anything to unlock Kiriko, you’ll need to reach level 55 of the Season 1 Battle Pass on the free track. Alternatively, she’ll be available after Season 1 through the shop or by completing challenges. More details on that will come in the leadup to Season 2.

ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON – Reveal Trailer

I have not played an Armored Core game in a very long time, and even then I was never the biggest fan. But this looks cool as hell. It’s coming in 2023 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and PC.

Here’s some official words:

Genius Dog 336 x 280 - Animated

ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON will offer a game experience based on the mech game know-how FromSoftware cultivated over 25 years of developing games in the series, but now introducing groundbreaking gameplay found in the developer’s recent action games. The new ARMORED CORE title will combine these elements into thrilling action that only mechas can provide. The game promises to be a unique entry in the mech action game genre.

In ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, players will be able to freely move through massive three-dimensional environments with rapid maneuverability while experiencing visceral vehicular combat. Signature to FromSoftware’s carefully crafted game design, the game will feature challenging and memorable battles along with a fulfilling progression system and deep gameplay, all of it now powered by assembling mechs and going into combat with massive bosses. Players will recognize the sense of satisfaction and achievement when they overcome a difficult situation and relish momentary victory, and perhaps a boost to their standing, before encountering the next challenge.

After Heated Battle, Genshin Impact Wins Player’s Voice at The 2022 Game Awards

Published

 on

Genshin Impact has won the Player’s Voice award at The Game Awards 2022, following an intense battle against Elden Ring and Sonic Frontiers.

Unlike other awards bestowed at The Game Awards, which are primarily determined by members of the press and other influential individuals in the industry, the Player’s Voice category is 100% fan-voted. Earlier this week, ahead o the show, the results projected that Genshin Impact would edge out both Sonic Frontiers and Elden Ring. Other nominees for the Player’s Voice category include God of War: Ragnarok and Stray.

Although Elden Ring, in particular, did not get selected, FromSoftware’s latest project did go home with a few awards, including Best Art Direction and Best Game Direction. For more on the winners from this year’s Game Awards, check out our roundup that features the nominees and winners of each category.
