Pinterest breaks daily download record due to user interest in iOS 14 design ideas – TechCrunch

Published

 on

The excitement around the ability to customize your iPhone homescreen following the release of iOS 14 has been paying off for Pinterest. According to new third-party estimates, Pinterest’s app has seen record global daily downloads and a swift climb up the App Store’s Top Charts as users sought out iPhone design inspiration — like photos to use for custom icons or wallpapers to match their new widgets, for example.

App store intelligence firm Apptopia was the first to note the impact of the iOS 14 customization trend on Pinterest’s downloads. According to its data, Pinterest saw a record high number of daily downloads on September 21 when it recorded approximately 616,000 new installs worldwide.

Another third-party estimate, however, found Pinterest’s daily download record was actually broken the day before.

App store market intelligence firm Sensor Tower nears Apptopia’s estimate for September 21, as it recorded approximately 680,000 global installs across both iOS and Android, instead of 616,000.

But Sensor Tower data shows that Pinterest actually broke the record for the most daily downloads ever on September 20. (Or, at least, this was the most since January 2014, which is when Sensor Tower began tracking app download data).

On September 20, the firm estimates that Pinterest’s app generated around 800,000 installs across iOS and Android on a global basis. That represents 32% week-over-week growth from the 607,000 installs it saw on September 13 — a few days before the worldwide release of Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 14.

In addition, Pinterest swiftly climbed up from No. 47 on the top free iPhone charts in the U.S. on Friday, September 18 to No. 7 on Sunday, September 20. It then climbed up even further to No. 6 on Monday, September 21 — a figure that agrees with Apptopia’s data. The app may have briefly hit the No. 1 position, as well, but not long enough to be recorded as the No. 1 app for the day.

Pinterest is also now No. 1 in the Lifestyle category on the iPhone, though it has regularly taken either a No. 1 or No. 2 position in this category as of February 4, 2020, Sensor Tower also noted.

The Pinterest homepage today showcases iPhone design trends as one of its “Daily Inspirations,” where the collection “Trending wallpapers and aesthetic home screen ideas” is currently sitting at the top of the page. Here, users are finding iPhone backgrounds and sharing other custom designs and icon sets for people to use in their own creations.

The iOS 14 update has had a large impact on the app ecosystem, as it finally delivered a feature Android users have had for years: homescreen widgets.

In combination with the new iOS App Library that lets you hide away less frequently-used apps, the iOS update has managed to tap into what was clearly pent-up consumer demand for being able to personalize the iPhone interface to their own tastes and interests. iPhone users are also now taking advantage of Apple’s Shortcuts app to create custom icons — although this is more of a hack, as the process isn’t really replacing the icon itself, but rather creating a shortcut to launch the app instead.

This redesign trend hasn’t only impacted Pinterest.

User demand for new widgets and creative tools is now playing out across the iPhone App Store and its Top Charts.

Currently, for example, the top three positions on the U.S. App Store’s Top Free Charts are held by widget-making applications: Widgetsmith, Color Widgets and Photo Widget, respectively. Pinterest has moved up to No. 5 as of the time of writing, and is followed by Motivation – Daily Quotes, another app gaining downloads for its widgets. Meanwhile, an app called Tune Track, an early adopter of widgets, has now found itself in the No. 8 position, as well. Even the Top Paid Charts are feeling the influence, as a Photo Widget is No. 1 and the creative design tool Procreate Pocket is No. 2.

Whether design tools will continue to reign remains to be seen. Some people are frustrated by the way Shortcuts are launched — it first redirects to the Shortcuts app, then launches the app in question. If Apple were to endorse the redesign trend, it would do away with this intermediary step to make custom shortcuts more useful.

Pinterest could not comment on the app download figures, but it confirmed the download spike isn’t attributable to a paid user acquisition campaign at this time. Intead, the company says it’s seeing organic increases in both downloads and iOS 14-related searches.

“There has been an increase in searches for iOS 14 wallpapers and homescreen design this week by Gen Z users, a demographic group that grew 50% year-over-year in June 2020,” a Pinterest spokesperson told TechCrunch. “These Pinners often use Pinterest as a resource for aesthetic inspiration and decorating offline spaces like bedrooms, so it’s interesting to see them seek inspiration for their online spaces, too,” they added.

Black Friday 2020: All Retailer Ads, Best Deals, Store Closings, And More – GameSpot

Published

 on

It’s been an incredibly strange and brutal year, but somehow, it’s nearly November, and the busy holiday shopping season is now upon us. In the United States, Black Friday is known as the best time of year to save money on big-ticket items, to cross all those names off your shopping list and splurge for yourself a little (or a lot) too. But with COVID-19 still a very real threat in the US, Black Friday 2020 is going to look much different from previous years.

Fortunately, Black Friday has been developing a strong online presence for years now. With companies like Amazon proving that huge online sales like Prime Day can be a major success, retailers have slowly been offering more noteworthy Black Friday deals online over the years, and this year will be no exception. In fact, with retailers looking to avoid mass crowds that normally push into stores on Black Friday, there’s even greater incentive to make sure the best deals are also available online–and earlier.

So what has been confirmed so far regarding retailers’ plans for Black Friday 2020? Here’s what we know right now about Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday shopping this year.

Many stores are closing on Thanksgiving Day

Walmart led the charge in announcing all Walmart and Sam’s Club locations will be closed on Thanksgiving Day (November 26), breaking a decade-long tradition in which Black Friday offers would be available in-store as early as Thanksgiving evening. Soon after, Target, Best Buy, and GameStop announced they would be closing their doors on Thanksgiving as well.

While certainly the best decision to allow employees more time with their families and to avoid huge crowds in stores on Thanksgiving, this is a major change to the typical rhythm of Black Friday, as we’re used to seeing some of the best doorbuster deals kick off on Thanksgiving Day. As a result, we expect to see some great online-only doorbusters this Thanksgiving and an overall shift in the deals schedule.

You can check out more of the major retailers who have confirmed they’re closing their doors on Thanksgiving this year below. Of course, some stores traditionally close on Thanksgiving Day every year, such as Apple and Costco, and it’s likely they’ll remain closed this year as well.

Confirmed store closings for Thanksgiving Day 2020

  • Walmart / Sam’s Club
  • Target
  • Best Buy
  • GameStop
  • Kohl’s
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • TJ Maxx
  • JCPenney
  • Bed Bath & Beyond
  • Office Depot

Black Friday deals are going to start earlier this year

To avoid the massive rush of people visiting stores in mid to late November, Black Friday-level deals will start rolling out much earlier this year to space out the promotions. Target has confirmed its first Black Friday deals will start November 1, with “Black Friday pricing” available throughout the entire month. Meanwhile, Best Buy released its first batch of Black Friday deals during Amazon Prime Day, and the store is still offering Black Friday prices online now. GameStop and Walmart have both pledged to offer deals earlier than usual as well. And with Prime Day in the rearview mirror, Amazon has already moved on with its “Holiday Dash” sale, which is offering steep discounts in the leadup to Black Friday weekend.

Though it may seem strange, this is a natural progression of the way Black Friday has been unfolding in recent years. Black Friday ads usually start to leak in late October, and some retailers have designated the entire month of November as a major deals period in the past. Gone are the days when Black Friday stuck to a single week–the frenzy has been expanding for several years now, so it’s no huge surprise that those promotions are kicking off in October or early November at some stores as part of an overall holiday push.

That said, it’s safe to assume many Black Friday offers will still center around the week of Thanksgiving, with the bulk of the deals kicking off between November 22 and November 30. This year, however, you won’t have to push through any crowds to get the best offers, as retailers will likely avoid in-store exclusives.

Friday is getting into the Halloween spirit, dressing up as the always iconic Black Friday. We’re still weeks away from Thanksgiving and actual Black Friday, but Best Buy has bumped some of the best deals of the year up to this weekend so you can get a jump-start on your holiday shopping. (Or snag a little something for yourself.) The deals are major, and we’ve got a list of the best savings in tech right here, but there are some truly door-busting kitchen deals happening right now. We’re talking a $30 air fryer, a $30 multicooker, a $100 Ninja Blender (normally $140) and an army of very handy, small kitchen appliances and gadgets down as low as $10 or $15.

Check out our top picks for kitchen deals on now at Best Buy’s early Black Friday event. The sale technically runs through the weekend but Best Buy bargains are known to sell out, so you may not want to sleep on this one. The larger items — more than $40 — include free shipping and everything can be picked up for free in-store, pending inventory.

Bella

One of the best prices you’ll find on an air fryer of this size. It’s large enough to cook crispy fries, wings and calamari for a group and costs less than a night of takeout for two.

Insignia

This does all the things an Instant Pot does but you’ll pay a third of the price. It also scores super high marks in a whopping 4,000-plus verified purchase reviews, so don’t stress if you’re not as familiar with the brand name. We’ve done the digging.

Ninja

You’re an adult so it’s time to get yourself an adult blender. I promise it’ll make all the difference in the world. Mine turned me into a total smoothie guy and that’s a fun world to be a part of. This powerful Ninja can crush ice in seconds, whip dense ingredients into soups and sauces and can be used as a food processor too. The to-go cups mean you can blend a drink and sashay out the door with a healthy breakfast never having to wash a single thing. This is mega, people. For reference, the same bundle is $40 more at Amazon.

Tell me this cherry red Nespresso machine wouldn’t look totally fabulous on your countertop? This line is a step up from your standard pod coffee maker in overall design and performance — and $105 is a very nice price. It’ll make quick cups of hot coffee or creamy espresso with one button push using custom pods. This model doesn’t come with a milk frother but, pssst, I’ve got a secret: You can easily find one of those for just $20.

And don’t sleep on a small army of mini kitchen appliances marked down as low as $10 or $15. That includes handy egg cookers, waffle makers, rice cookers and mini blenders. See the entire list of mini appliances and gadgets on sale here.

While the Family plan offers the best value, most people will likely end up sticking with the Individual tier option.
