Canada News Media is committed to accuracy, and part of that commitment is owning our mistakes. When we publish something that is wrong, we fix it openly. This page explains how we handle errors and how readers can ask us to review something we have published.
Our commitment
We correct errors of fact promptly and transparently. We do not quietly delete or alter the record to hide a mistake. When a correction is warranted, we make the change and, where the error was significant, we tell readers what was changed and why. Honesty about our own errors is part of earning the trust we ask of our readers.
What we correct
We issue a correction when we have published a factual error, such as a wrong name, date, figure, location, or statement that misrepresents what occurred. We distinguish between:
• Factual errors, which we correct on the record.
• Minor issues such as typos or formatting, which we may fix without a formal note.
• Matters of interpretation or opinion, which are not errors of fact, though we will always consider a reader’s concern fairly.
How we handle a correction
When a significant factual error is confirmed, we correct the article and add a clear note indicating that the piece has been updated, what was corrected, and the date of the change. The goal is for readers to understand both what we originally published and what the accurate information is.
Updates to developing stories
News often develops over time. When we add new information to an evolving story, that is an update rather than a correction. Where it helps readers understand how a story has changed, we note that the article has been updated and when.
How to request a correction
If you believe we have published a factual error, please let us know. When you contact us, it helps to include:
• The title of the article and a link to it.
• The specific statement you believe is inaccurate.
• Any source or evidence that supports the correct information.
You can reach our editorial team through the contact details on our website or by writing to our office at 8515 106a Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta. We review every request we receive and respond as quickly as we reasonably can.
Who is responsible
Corrections are overseen by our editorial team, led by our Managing Editor. Final responsibility for the accuracy of our published work rests with our newsroom.
