MONTREAL: Jacob Fowler made 30 saves for his second career NHL shutout, and Zachary Bolduc scored in the sixth round of a shootout as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 on Saturday night.
Fowler sealed the win by stopping Detroit’s Nate Danielson in the shootout, according to The Associated Press. The 21-year-old goaltender was making his second straight start after being recalled from the Laval Rocket on Wednesday.
The result snapped a three-game losing streak for Montreal and gave the Canadiens their first home win of the season. The team improved to 2-2-1. Detroit fell to 1-3-1 and played its first road game of the season, one night after a 6-3 loss to Seattle on Friday.
Detroit goaltender Dmitri Tarasov, making his first start for the Red Wings, also stopped 30 shots. Neither team scored through regulation or overtime, in part because three goals were taken off the board.
Montreal’s Cole Caufield had an early shot ruled not to have crossed the goal line. Bolduc had a second-period goal waved off for goaltender interference on Jake Evans. In overtime, Detroit’s Alexandre Texier had a goal called back for offside.
Fans at the Canadiens’ home arena also chanted “We want Larkin!” during the game, a reference to Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade in the off-season, the AP reported.
The game drew heavy interest from Canadian hockey fans. French-language searches for the Canadiens’ win were among the most popular topics in Google Trends Canada on Sunday, with Quebec outlets including Le Journal de Montréal and La Presse carrying live coverage and recaps.
Fowler’s first NHL shutout came in a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, according to CBS Sports. Saturday’s performance showed the young goaltender could also win a game that stayed scoreless for more than 65 minutes.
Shootouts are decided by a series of one-on-one attempts after a scoreless five-minute overtime. Bolduc’s goal in the sixth round, combined with Fowler’s stop on Danielson, ended a game in which Montreal had two goals disallowed and Detroit one.
The Canadiens’ next game is Tuesday at home against the Buffalo Sabres. Detroit hosts the New Jersey Devils the same night.
