Rookie Cameron Boozer hit the go-ahead jumper with 20 seconds left, and the Memphis Grizzlies erased a 12-point deficit with a 17-0 run to beat the Golden State Warriors 111-108 on Friday night in San Francisco.
Boozer finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Ty Jerome led Memphis with 28 points. Stephen Curry scored 24 for the Warriors, while rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, and Brandin Podziemski added 18.
Golden State led 90-84 entering the fourth quarter after Podziemski hit a go-ahead three-pointer late in the third. De’Anthony Melton’s three-pointer with 3:47 left made it 106-94. Memphis then scored 17 straight points.
Jerome’s three-pointer with 1:24 left cut the Warriors’ lead to 106-105. Curry’s three-point attempt was blocked by Zach Edey, and Jaylen Wells tied the game at 106 from the free-throw line. Boozer’s jumper put Memphis ahead for good.
The Warriors missed nine straight shots and did not score a field goal for the rest of the game. Curry and Podziemski both missed three-pointers before Boozer’s shot.
The game was chippy. Isaiah Stewart of the Grizzlies and Draymond Green of the Warriors each received a technical foul before halftime, and Lendeborg and Jerome were handed double technicals in the third quarter. Podziemski went to the locker room briefly in the first quarter after Edey hit him in the head.
Golden State started two rookies, Lendeborg and two-way centre Graham Ike, in a home opener. The Associated Press said it was the first time that has happened since the NBA began recording starters in 1970-71. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he wants Lendeborg to run the floor better.
The Warriors visit the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night. The Grizzlies play at Sacramento on Sunday night. Memphis has won both of its games this season.
The game was among the NBA results Canadians were searching for on Saturday morning, a day after the Toronto Raptors beat the Washington Wizards. Canada News Media has more on that game in its recap of Barnes and Barrett leading the Raptors past the Wizards 112-102. Golden State also opened its season with a loss earlier in the week, which Canada News Media covered when Kessler went 12-for-12 as the Lakers beat the Warriors 127-105.
