Alberta’s hotly debated new electoral riding boundaries were set to be made public Monday in the legislature, Global News reported, with the Opposition NDP already promising a court challenge.
NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi has said Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservatives plan to use their legislative majority to draw the boundaries in a way that gives them an unfair advantage in next year’s election. The NDP has said it believes the changes amount to gerrymandering in battleground ridings in Lethbridge and Calgary, and that it will challenge the new ridings in court. The government has not been quoted in the Global News report responding to that claim.
Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing electoral districts to help one party, based on voting patterns, rather than on shared geography and community priorities.
The timing is tight. Alberta Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure has warned he is running out of time to have everything ready for the scheduled polling day of Oct. 18, 2027, according to Global News.
As we reported earlier Monday, the province’s justice minister has said the government has no intention of moving the election date. The NDP’s allegations about specific ridings are its own claims, and they have not been tested in court.
The Opposition said it has already spoken to what it has seen in the report. The full boundaries were expected to be available publicly after being tabled, and the details of which ridings change have not yet been independently reviewed by Canada News Media.
The dispute adds to a busy political week in Canada, with the federal budget due Thursday. Read our coverage of Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne’s budget preview.
