Fireworks will be permitted in the City of Waterloo from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Nov. 8 and 9 for Diwali, the city said in a news release on Oct. 28.
Fireworks must be set off on private property and are not allowed in public spaces such as schools or parks. They may be handled only by adults aged 18 and older, the city said.
Waterloo permits fireworks on only four occasions: Lunar New Year, Victoria Day, Canada Day and Diwali, which is also known as Deepavali. Since January 2026, the sale of fireworks has no longer been permitted in the city.
The city asked residents to consider the effect on neighbours and wildlife. It suggested telling neighbours in advance, since noise can disturb pets, children, people with different work schedules and those sensitive to loud sounds. It also advised against setting off fireworks near water systems or in areas where wildlife live, because fireworks contain chemicals that can harm animals and the environment.
Residents can report fireworks used outside the permitted times, or excessive noise, by calling 519-747-8785. In an emergency or a dangerous situation, the city said to call 911.
