The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled Sunchanggung 990 Ssamjang, a seasoned soybean paste sold in Alberta and British Columbia, because it contains sesame that is not declared on the label.
The agency said in a Class 1 recall notice posted Oct. 29 that there have been no reported reactions linked to the product. It said the recall was triggered by the company, HYMS Trading Ltd.
The recalled product is the 170-gram tub, sold under Korean characters only with no English brand name. Its UPC is 8 801039 008478. The notice covers all codes where sesame is not declared on the label.
People with a sesame allergy or sensitivity should not eat the paste, the CFIA said, because it may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction. Anyone who has the product should check their cupboards and fridges, and throw it out or return it to the store where it was bought. The agency also said the product should not be served, used, sold or distributed.
The same company is also the recalling firm for Taeyangcho Gochujang, a hot pepper paste recalled on Oct. 3 because it contains wheat that is not declared on the label. That Class 1 recall, triggered by a consumer complaint, covers 170-gram, 500-gram and one-kilogram sizes sold in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The CFIA said people with celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders should not eat it. No reactions have been reported in that case either.
Consumers can read both notices on the Government of Canada recalls and safety alerts site. See also the gochujang notice. Canada News Media also reported on a surimi stick recall in B.C. last week.
