Is the Garmin Fenix 9 worth it?
At nearly $1,400, the Fenix 9 costs more than most phones. What the money buys is endurance and toughness: a titanium bezel, a sapphire lens that resists scratches, and a battery Garmin’s listing puts at up to 16 days in smartwatch mode. The watch weighs 75 g, light for a case this size.
The listing highlights stamina metrics that show how far, how fast and how long you can go based on your training history, plus a feature called Epic that strings multi-day activities and photos into one story. It also lists more than 100 activity profiles, with updated rowing and rucking modes, and routable TopoActive maps that come preloaded.

If most of your exercise is a gym session and a weekend walk, you will use only a fraction of that. The Fenix line is built for long, remote and multi-sport days, and priced accordingly.
What do owners say?
The Fenix 9 is new, and its Amazon.ca listing had only eight ratings on Oct. 24, 2026: 83 per cent five stars and 17 per cent four stars, with no Canadian reviews yet. The reviews we read were short. Owners called it accurate and great looking, and one said it was a watch they did not know they needed. The one complaint we saw was that a buyer wished it had more watch-face apps.
The previous-generation Fenix 8 has a much bigger review base, which is a useful guide to what the line does well. It had 4.5 stars from about 2,600 ratings, with 81 per cent five stars and 7 per cent one star. Reviewers there most often praised build quality, fitness tracking and battery life. The most common reservations were value for money, ease of use and phone connectivity.

Garmin Fenix 9 vs Fenix 8
The obvious rival is Garmin’s own previous model. The Fenix 8 (47 mm, AMOLED, Sapphire, Carbon Gray DLC Titanium) was listed at $1,189.98 on Amazon.ca, down from a $1,399.99 list price, sold by Amazon.ca. That is about $210 less than the Fenix 9. Its listing title also advertises a dive rating and a built-in LED flashlight.
The Fenix 9 listing leans on newer training tools, including the stamina curve, the Epic feature and the expanded rowing and rucking profiles. If those matter to you, the newer watch is the pick. If you mostly want a rugged, long-lasting GPS watch and care about the price, the Fenix 8 now has the better value and a far longer track record.

Who should skip the Garmin Fenix 9?
Skip it if you mainly want notifications and step counts, if you want an all-in-one Apple-style smartwatch experience, or if a roughly $1,400 watch is hard to justify. The Pro versions cost more still: a 47mm Fenix 9 Pro was listed at $1,539.99 and the inReach satellite version at $1,679.99. Anyone with a small wrist should also look at the 43mm size before buying.

Is there a cheaper alternative?
Yes. The Garmin Forerunner 965 running smartwatch was listed at $857, sold by Amazon.ca, with 4.6 stars from about 2,000 ratings. Its listing describes a colourful AMOLED display, training metrics and recovery insights, and up to 23 days of battery in smartwatch mode. It is built around running and triathlon rather than expedition use, but it is roughly $540 less than the Fenix 9.

When is the best time to buy in Canada?
Retailers in Canada have generally run their biggest electronics promotions around Black Friday (Nov. 27 this year), Cyber Monday, Boxing Day and Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days. We cannot promise a sale on a new Garmin. If you want it before the holidays, watch the price history on the listing and compare it with the $1,399.99 we saw. Our Sony WH-1000XM6 and iPad Pro guides cover other big-ticket tech ahead of the sales.
