SASKATOON – Cumberland Avenue will close between College Drive and Elliott Street at 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, for about four to five weeks, and Saskatoon Transit will detour Route 10 and add a Route 510 shuttle for the same period, the City of Saskatoon said.
The city said in a news release Friday that two-way vehicle traffic, with one lane in each direction, will be maintained on College Drive through the Cumberland Avenue intersection. Pedestrians will be able to cross College Drive at a temporary signalized crossing to be installed immediately east of the intersection.
The closure is needed to relocate traffic signal poles throughout the intersection and install new curb along the north side of the road, the city said. It said the work must be finished so the north lanes can open to traffic and to prepare College Drive for operations over the winter.
The closure had been postponed on Thursday. In an update that day, the city said the previously planned closure had been delayed and a new date had not been set. Friday’s release confirmed the Oct. 26 start.
Saskatoon Transit said Route 10 will detour via 14th Street and Preston Avenue. The Route 510 shuttle will run between Cumberland Avenue and Place Riel via Cumberland Avenue, Osler Street, Wiggins Avenue, 14th Street and Preston Avenue, Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Transit said riders should expect delays. Trip-planning apps will not show the temporary detours, so riders are encouraged to plan ahead. Detour details are posted at saskatoontransit.ca/collegedrive, and questions can go to [email protected] or 306-975-3100.
Elsewhere downtown, the city said two more intersections on the 25th Street water main project, 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue, reopen Saturday. The 5th Avenue and 25th Street intersection stays fully closed until about Oct. 30. At 6th Avenue, one westbound lane is open and the eastbound lane is expected to reopen Oct. 30. The final phase, a water main replacement between 6th Avenue and Spadina Crescent, is expected to finish in 2027.
The city publishes a Daily Road Report of closures on major streets at saskatoon.ca/construction.
