A coroner’s inquest into the death of Evan Freeman, a 22-year-old man who died in 2019 following an interaction with Kingston Police, will begin on Nov. 16, Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General said Monday.

Dr. Armita Rahmani, regional supervising coroner for the East Region in Kingston, announced the inquest, which starts at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, 2026. Dr. David Eden will preside, and Kristin Smith and Courtney Barnes will act as inquest counsel.
Freeman died on Sept. 12, 2019, after an interaction with Kingston Police officers earlier the same day, the ministry said. An inquest is mandatory under Ontario’s Coroners Act.
The inquest will examine the circumstances of his death, and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths. It is expected to last 10 days and hear from about 10 witnesses.
The proceedings will be held by video conference, and the public can watch live through the inquest page at firstclassfacilitation.ca. More information on inquests is available at ontario.ca/page/coroners-inquests.
