An adult day program for seniors in Winnipeg’s Charleswood neighbourhood will continue under Deer Lodge Centre after Lions Housing Centres decided to end it, the Manitoba government announced Monday.

The program was run by Lions Housing Centres and funded by Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care until Lions announced it would end operations on Oct. 31, the province said. Deer Lodge Centre is taking over at the same Charleswood location, with the goal of minimizing disruption for participants.
“When families raised concerns about losing this important program, we listened and we acted,” Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara said. Asagwara said the government has called on Lions to work with it to fast-track access to the space so programming can continue.
Jane Curtis, interim president and CEO of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, said the authority stepped in quickly once it learned Lions was ending its lease, so the program could continue at its current location.
Deer Lodge Centre is also expanding its own adult day program and will add 20 participant spaces for seniors living with dementia, the minister said.
Adult day programs help seniors stay connected to their communities and keep living at home, offering therapeutic recreation, meals and snacks, health and safety education and community outings. The announcement was posted on the Manitoba government newsroom.
