WINNIPEG – Voting locations in Winnipeg’s municipal election are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and voters must show proof of their name and current address, according to the City of Winnipeg.
Voters will choose a mayor, a councillor and school trustees. The city said 12 candidates are running for mayor, 54 for councillor and more than 90 for school trustee. Names appear on the ballot in the order shown on the city’s list of nominated candidates.
To vote for mayor or councillor, you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old on Oct. 28, and a resident or property owner in the City of Winnipeg since April 28, 2026. You vote in the ward where you live. School trustee voters must also live in the school division ward on election day.
There are 184 voting locations on election day. The city encourages voters to use the locations listed on their voter’s notice, and you can search your address at winnipeg.ca/wheredoivote for every location available to you. Bring your voter’s notice if you received one, because the city said it makes the process quicker. People without one can call 311.
For ID, you can show one original government-issued piece with your photo, name and current address, such as a valid driver’s licence or a Manitoba identification card. Otherwise, show two original pieces that together prove your name and current address. Both must carry your name and at least one must show your current address. Examples include a Manitoba Health Services card, a credit card statement or a utility bill, and the city’s full list of accepted ID also covers items such as a bank statement, a lease and a social insurance number card. A Canadian passport is accepted only as proof of identity, so it needs to be paired with something that shows your address.
The city expects the busiest times to be when locations open and from 3 p.m. until close, and suggested voting between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for shorter waits. Anyone still in line at 8 p.m. will be able to vote. Parents and caregivers can bring children with them.
Advance voting is over. The city said 50,767 eligible voters cast ballots early, so Election Day is the last chance to vote in person. Voters who need help can ask an election officer or a companion for assistance, and the ballot marking device was available at select advance locations.
Results will be posted on the city’s election website shortly after polls close at 8 p.m. and updated as results come in from voting locations. Four school division wards extend outside Winnipeg limits, and ballots cast at polling places there are hand counted by the neighbouring municipalities. School trustee winners in those wards may not be declared until Oct. 29, the city said.
