NEW YORK – Daniel Ríos scored in second-half stoppage time to earn CF Montréal a 1-1 draw with New York City FC at Citi Field on Saturday.
Montréal had trailed since the 41st minute, when Andrés Perea took a pass from Nicolás Fernández Mercau and fired a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner. The goal gave New York the lead going into the break.
The visitors pushed for an equalizer through the second half and found it in the 91st minute. Ríos, the Montréal forward, struck a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the top left corner to level the match and salvage a point on the road.
The match was played on Oct. 31 and was streamed on Apple TV in the United States. The Canadian Press and The Associated Press reported that Ríos scored two minutes into stoppage time, and that New York defender Nico Cavallo and Montréal midfielder Hennadii Synchuk were among the players battling for control in the second half.
The draw came after a heavy defeat for the club earlier this week, a 4-0 loss in Charlotte in which Liel Abada scored a hat trick. Saturday’s late goal gave Montréal a response after that result.
Other Canadian MLS clubs have also been in action this week. Toronto FC beat D.C. United 2-1, and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Diego 4-1.
