Report: Mets trade RHP Freddy Peralta to Rays

The New York Mets have moved on from a struggling former all-star. 

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Mets will receive three prospects in the deal: outfielder Aidan Smith, righty Gary Gill Hill and second baseman Emilien Pitre.

The Mets acquired the two-time all-star via a trade with the Brewers in the off-season, and he was the team’s opening-day starter.

However, Peralta has been unable to recapture the form that led to his second all-star selection last season, pitching to a 4.99 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 22 starts.

It’s been a significant departure from the 2.70 ERA and 1.07 WHIP that earned him a fifth-place finish in National League Cy voting in 2025. 

It isn’t the first time that Peralta’s performance has fluctuated. He spent the first eight seasons of his career in Milwaukee and had a 2.81 ERA during his other all-star campaign in 2021 before returning to good-not-great results in the following seasons. 

Peralta will now aim to regain his ace form with the Rays (65-45), where he’ll join a rotation already sporting the likes of Shane McClanahan, Drew Rasmussen and Nick Martinez.

Smith, 22, was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. The Rays’ No. 15 prospect on MLB Pipeline, Smith is batting .209 with a .672 OPS, 10 home runs and 16 stolen bases in 59 games split between three minor-league levels this season.

Gill Hill, 21, was selected by the Rays in the sixth round of the 2022 draft. In 20 starts this season, split between high-A and double-A, he has a 4.49 ERA with a 1.385 WHIP.

Pitre, 23, is a native of Repentigny, Que., and was selected by the Rays in the second round of the 2024 draft out of the University of Kentucky. The Canadian is batting .308 with a .885 OPS in 88 games this season split between high-A and double-A.
