NEW YORK – Tye Kartye and Will Cuylle each scored twice as the New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, handing Vancouver its fourth straight loss, the NHL said.
Dylan Garand made 19 saves for the Rangers in their first game since goaltender Igor Shesterkin was injured in a 3-1 loss to Washington on Friday. NHL.com reported that Shesterkin is out for the rest of the season. Kevin Lankinen also made 19 saves for Vancouver.
Kartye scored 27 seconds in, and Jake DeBrusk tied it for the Canucks late in the first period. Cuylle put New York back in front early in the second, and Elias Pettersson tied it at 2-2 with a short-handed goal, the first of his career. Kartye restored the lead late in the period.
Alexis Lafreniere, Gabe Perreault and Cuylle scored in the third period to pull away. Canucks coach Manny Malhotra blamed a lack of details and intensity down the stretch. “Lack of details. Lack of intensity to finish the game,” he said. Forward Drew O’Connor called it a “bad third period.”
Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said, “I thought the third period we were terrific.” Garand said losing Shesterkin was “a blow to the group for sure.”
The Rangers improved to 5-2-0, including 4-0-0 at home. The Canucks fell to 2-5-0.
In Philadelphia, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Flyers 4-1 for their fifth straight win. Andrei Svechnikov, Shayne Gostisbehere, Sebastian Aho and Mark Jankowski scored for Carolina, which improved to 5-1-1.
Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves for the Hurricanes. Christian Dvorak scored for the Flyers, who dropped to 0-5-2, a franchise record for the worst start to a season through seven games. Joseph Woll made 26 saves in the loss.
Aho has 11 points in a six-game point streak. Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said his team “got 20 guys tonight that just did enough” while missing key players. Dvorak said the Flyers “know we’ve got to turn it around ASAP.”
Gostisbehere said his goal was “a freebie for me.” Carolina’s Jordan Staal missed the game with a lower-body injury, and Brind’Amour said he does not expect a long absence. Philadelphia placed forward Travis Konecny on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.
