ST. LOUIS _ Jacob Fowler made a career-high 46 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Zachary Bolduc and Florian Xhekaj scored as the Montreal Canadiens beat the St. Louis Blues 2-0 on Tuesday night.
The Blues outshot Montreal 46-20 at Enterprise Center, but Fowler turned aside every shot. Jordan Binnington stopped 18 of 20 shots in the loss, according to the game summary on ESPN. The crowd was 16,234.
Bolduc broke the scoreless tie at 8:37 of the second period, with assists going to Mike Matheson and Alexandre Texier, according to the NHL’s official play-by-play. Xhekaj added the insurance goal 2:17 into the third, set up by Matheson and Kirby Dach.
That was all the offence the Canadiens needed. St. Louis pressed for most of the night and finished with 46 shots to Montreal’s 20, while the Canadiens blocked 18 shots to the Blues’ 11, ESPN’s box score shows.
Fowler, a rookie, has now won six straight starts. He was named the NHL’s third star of the week on Monday after going 2-0 in the period ending Oct. 25, as we reported on Tuesday. His wins in that stretch were a 4-1 victory in Chicago and a 2-1 decision over the Winnipeg Jets in the Heritage Classic, where he became the youngest goaltender in NHL history to start an outdoor game at 21 years 335 days.
In that outdoor game, Fowler stopped 33 shots in front of 32,342 fans in Winnipeg. Earlier this month he made 30 saves in a shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings. Tuesday’s 46 saves topped both nights.
The win moved Montreal to 7-3-2, good for 16 points, and extended the Canadiens’ point streak to five games. St. Louis fell to 5-6-1 with 11 points.
The game was the first stop on a four-game road trip for the Canadiens, who have leaned on Fowler as the team works to limit the chances it gives up. After the Heritage Classic win, coach Martin St. Louis said he wanted his team to defend less. On Tuesday, the Canadiens were again outshot, and Fowler again covered for it.
Montreal returns to face the Jets in Winnipeg on Nov. 3, the second meeting between the clubs in nine days after the outdoor game.
Fowler’s name has been one of the most searched among Canadian hockey fans in recent days, according to Google Trends Canada, which showed searches for the goaltender climbing again late Tuesday.
