CALGARY – Matt Coronato had a goal and three assists, a career high for points, as the Calgary Flames beat the Seattle Kraken 6-2 on Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Joel Frost, Aydar Suniev, Matvei Gridin, Joel Farabee and Ryan Strome also scored for the Flames (6-7-0), who won their fifth straight home game and their fifth in their past six overall. Dustin Wolf made 20 saves.
Frederick Gaudreau and Mackie Samoskevich scored for the Kraken (8-5-1). Philipp Grubauer stopped 10 of 14 shots before giving way to Joey Daccord at 10:40 of the second period. Daccord made 11 saves in relief.
Frost opened the scoring on the power play at 2:32 of the first period, taking a pass from Farabee. Gaudreau tied it at 11:34 when he put back his own rebound off Wolf, with Samoskevich earning the assist.
Suniev put Calgary back in front at 5:45 of the second, one-timing a pass from Frost. Gridin made it 3-1 on the power play at 8:43 when his shot deflected in off the skate of Seattle defenceman Ryker Evans. Farabee then beat Grubauer through the legs from the slot at 10:40, with Mikael Backlund assisting, and Grubauer was replaced.
Samoskevich pulled Seattle within two on the power play at 18:15 of the second, with Kaapo Kakko and Berkly Catton assisting. Coronato restored the three-goal margin 39 seconds into the third period, and Strome closed the scoring at 18:14, chipping in a pass from Gridin.
“I think in the second and third (periods), we were really playing our game the way we want to,” Coronato said, according to NHL.com.
Farabee said the team’s mood has improved. “Everyone’s confidence is just a little bit more than it was before,” he said.
Gaudreau gave Seattle’s side of it. “They’re a really good team. We knew that, but somehow they were better than us tonight,” he said. Kraken coach Lane Lambert was blunter, calling it “probably the worst 40 minutes I’ve been a part of since I got here.”
The four-point night was the first of Coronato’s career. Catton extended his point streak to six games with two goals and five assists over that stretch. Calgary has now scored four or more goals in 61 straight games, tying Boston for the second-longest streak in NHL history. The New York Rangers hold the record at 65.
The Flames were coming off a 4-0 loss in Edmonton on Wednesday, a game we covered here. Earlier this month they beat the Detroit Red Wings, as Farabee had three points, and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, as Gridin scored twice.
