Film director Michael Mann was treated in hospital and released after a gun went off at a Los Angeles shooting range on Saturday, leaving him with what his representatives called a superficial injury.
“A weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” his representatives said in a statement, E! News reported. They said he was treated and released Sunday.
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told The New York Times that Mann, 83, was taken to hospital in stable condition, and that responding officers confirmed the shooting was accidental and the injury minor, according to E! News.
TMZ reported, citing sources, that it happened at about 4 p.m. at The Range LA, when Mann appeared to be holstering his weapon during target practice. TMZ said police and firefighters responded and that he went to hospital by ambulance. Police described it as a training accident and said Mann had no intention of harming himself, the outlet reported. TMZ and Anadolu Agency described a leg wound, while the statement from his representatives, as reported, did not say where he was hurt.
Mann has pursued target shooting as a hobby for decades, E! News said.
Mann is known for stylized crime dramas including Thief, Heat and Collateral. Heat, the 1995 film starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is known for a shootout staged across downtown Los Angeles. Mann said in a December 2025 interview with The Guardian, quoted by E! News, that the actors trained for months at sheriff’s department ranges “under appropriately rigid safety procedures.”
E! News said he is revisiting that story with the forthcoming sequel, Heat 2. His representatives’ statement, as reported, did not address the film.
Anadolu Agency also carried the report in its Nov. 2morning briefing, saying his injury was minor and that he was released after treatment.
