INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Scottie Barnes scored 15 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, Immanuel Quickley had 27, and the Toronto Raptors rallied from 13 points down to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 125-118 on Monday night, The Associated Press reported.
Barnes hit a turnaround jumper with 2:08 remaining to give Toronto its first lead of the night, part of a 12-1 run that decided the game. He also finished with 15 rebounds and eight assists. RJ Barrett added 26 points for the Raptors, who trailed by 13 going into the final period.
Kobe Sanders had a career-high 26 points for the Clippers, who have lost six straight games since winning their season opener Oct. 21 against Sacramento. Gradey Dick made his first start for Los Angeles and had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes, according to the AP.
Reports differ slightly on the size of the comeback. The AP said Toronto trailed by 13 entering the fourth quarter, while other outlets put the largest deficit at 14 or 16 points at some stage of the game.
Both teams were playing the second night of a back-to-back. The Clippers had lost 124-112 at Golden State on Sunday. The Raptors had lost 131-125 at the Los Angeles Lakers, a game in which Luka Doncic scored 45 points, as Canada News Media reported on Monday.
The game carried extra weight because of the history between the two clubs. Kawhi Leonard, who spent the previous seven seasons with the Clippers, was unavailable with a left knee injury, so his return to Southern California was delayed, the AP said. Leonard was traded back to Toronto in September for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a pick swap, nearly three months after the deal was first agreed in July. The deal was held up while the NBA finished its investigation, which ended with the Clippers forfeiting five first-round draft picks and paying a $30-million fine for circumventing salary-cap rules in how Leonard was compensated. Team owner Steve Ballmer was suspended for one year. Our earlier story has the full terms of the trade.
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue was on the floor despite an illness that kept him from holding his pregame news conference. A team spokesperson had called him a game-time decision, the AP said.
Toronto opened the season with a 135-92 rout of the Chicago Bulls, with Leonard scoring 23 points, then suffered its first loss against Minnesota on Oct. 25. The Raptors beat Washington 112-102 on Oct. 23 behind Barnes and Barrett.
The Raptors next play at Denver on Wednesday night. The Clippers host Miami the same night.
Search interest in the game spiked in Canada on Monday night, according to Google Trends, as Raptors fans looked for the final score and details of the late rally.
