Winter storms can knock out power for hours or days, and a portable power station is a battery with household outlets that can keep a phone, router, CPAP or small fridge running. Unlike a gas generator, it makes no exhaust and can be used indoors. Our winter power outage kit guide covers the rest of the basics.

Below are five power stations from Amazon.ca, chosen from the search results for their ratings, review counts and the range of sizes, from a small 257 watt-hour unit to a 3,600 watt-hour home-backup system. Capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh): the higher the number, the longer it runs your gear. Prices were shown on Amazon.ca on Nov. 6, 2026, and may change.

How we chose

We looked at Amazon.ca search results for portable power stations and picked five units across a range of capacities and prices, favouring higher ratings and more reviews. We did not test them, and the specs above come from the listings. Before buying, add up the watts of what you want to run and check it against the unit’s output, and never run a power station in a way its manual does not allow. Ratings with few reviews, such as the 15 and 25 reviews on two Jackery models, are less reliable than ones with thousands.
