Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime beat Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Monday, advancing to a meeting with Norway’s Casper Ruud.
The match lasted one hour 59 minutes and finished overnight in Canada, ending late Sunday into Monday, according to RDS.
Auger-Aliassime hit 37 winners to 13 for Carreño Busta, served seven aces and converted four of nine break points. He won 80 per cent of his first-serve points, compared with 63 per cent for his opponent, who is 35 and ranked 65th in the world.
The Montreal native has now beaten Carreño Busta in two straight meetings. He is in the last 16 in Shanghai for the second consecutive year, after losing in straight sets to Arthur Rinderknech at the same stage last year.
Quebec outlet Journal de Québec reported the win was his first with a new coach. Canada News Media could not independently confirm details of the coaching change.
Ruud, the 20th seed, is next. Sources differ on how the round is labelled, with some listing the match as a round-of-16 meeting and RDS describing it as a quarter-final.
Auger-Aliassime’s name was among the top trending searches in Canada on Monday, alongside Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who was set to play Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the same round.
Elsewhere in the draw, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas beat American Taylor Fritz on Monday after a replay dispute, ATP Tour reported.
