Heating season is here, and a smart thermostat is one of the few home upgrades that can pay for itself. These thermostats lower the heat when you are asleep or away, warm the house before you get home and let you change the temperature from your phone. We looked at five well-rated models on Amazon.ca, including a pick for homes heated with electric baseboards. Prices accurate as of Oct. 22, 2026, and may change.
Before you buy, check compatibility. Most of these models are built for central furnaces, heat pumps and other 24-volt systems, and several brands run online compatibility checkers. Homes with electric baseboard heaters need a line-voltage thermostat instead, such as the Mysa model below.
ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium
This is the pick for larger homes with hot and cold rooms. It comes with an ecobee SmartSensor that you place in another room, so the system can heat the rooms you are actually using instead of relying on one hallway reading. It sold for $279.98 on Amazon.ca on Oct. 22, down from a list price of $329.99, sold by Amazon.ca, with a 4.4 out of 5 star rating from 891 ratings and more than 500 bought in the past month.
Key specs: ecobee says it can save up to 26 per cent on energy bills and that it is Energy Star certified. It includes a SmartSensor, a Power Extender Kit for homes without a C-wire and a trim kit. ecobee says it is compatible with 95 per cent of HVAC systems, and it can show a live view from an ecobee doorbell camera.
Reviewers in Canada praise how well it runs heat pumps and how easy it is to change the temperature by voice. One owner who switched from Nest said the move was worth it. The most notable complaint came from a buyer who said the unit arrived with signs of previous use and had to be reset before pairing, and Amazon’s review summary says opinions on value for money and connectivity are mixed.

ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced
The Enhanced model is the best fit for most Canadian homes with a furnace. It drops the Premium’s included room sensor and built-in Alexa and Siri but keeps occupancy sensing built into the thermostat. It sold for $249.99 on Amazon.ca on Oct. 22, sold by Amazon.ca, with a 4.5 out of 5 star rating from 683 ratings and more than 500 bought in the past month.
Key specs: ecobee says it can save up to 26 per cent a year on heating and cooling. It can preheat the house before you arrive, learns your schedule and adjusts for humidity. It includes the Power Extender Kit and a trim kit, and ecobee says it works with 90 per cent of HVAC systems. It can be controlled from the ecobee app, an Apple Watch or a voice assistant.
Owners in Canada say installation is quick and the app is easy to use; one said she bought it mid-winter after her old thermostat started tripping the furnace breaker. A four-star reviewer warned to be careful with the wires on the power adapter because they can break easily, and one one-star reviewer said the thermostat began reading the wrong temperature after six months.

ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential
The Essential is ecobee’s entry model and the most popular listing in this guide, with more than 1,000 bought in the past month. It sold for $154.30 on Amazon.ca on Oct. 22, down from a list price of $179.99, sold by Amazon.ca, with a 4.3 out of 5 star rating from 367 ratings.
Key specs: it has a colour touchscreen, follows the schedule you set, tracks energy use in the ecobee app and works with Apple HomeKit and other smart home systems. ecobee says it is compatible with 85 per cent of systems. Unlike the pricier models, the Power Extender Kit and trim kit are sold separately, and it does not have built-in occupancy sensing.
Reviewers say setup is straightforward with step-by-step directions, and Amazon’s summary says some owners report real savings on their monthly bills. One buyer had to buy the Power Extender Kit separately, and a three-star reviewer in a condo returned it because the wiring was not compatible.

Google Nest Thermostat

This is the budget pick for households already using Google Home. It sold for $125.99 on Amazon.ca on Oct. 22, down from $179.97, sold by Amazon.ca, with a 4.0 out of 5 star rating from 407 ratings.
Key specs: Google says it can turn itself down when you leave, helps build an energy-saving schedule from the start and uses a feature called Savings Finder to suggest further savings. It can alert you if something seems wrong with your heating system and remind you to change the furnace filter. Google says installation usually takes 30 minutes or less.
Owners say it is easy to install and use. The ratings are more divided than the others in this guide: 16 per cent are one star. One cottage owner in Canada said the thermostat showed it was heating while the cabin had dropped to minus 1 C, without sending an alert. If you need reliable remote alerts for a cottage or rental, read the reviews closely.

Mysa Smart Thermostat Lite for electric baseboards

Many Canadian homes, condos and apartments heat with electric baseboards that standard smart thermostats cannot control. Mysa, which says its thermostat was engineered in Newfoundland, makes a line-voltage model for them. The Lite sold for $99 on Amazon.ca on Oct. 22, sold by Mysa, with a 4.5 out of 5 star rating from 463 ratings and more than 600 bought in the past month.
Key specs: it works with 120-volt or 240-volt baseboard, fan-forced, wall, convector and radiant ceiling heaters, up to 1,900 watts at 120 volts or 3,800 watts at 240 volts. It needs four wires, including a neutral or a second live wire, and will not work on a two-wire setup or on 24-volt furnaces. It connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with no hub, and Mysa lists a five-year limited warranty on units it sells, plus bilingual Canadian support. You will need one per heater or zone.
Reviewers like the app and the savings from scheduling; one owner installed three in a two-bedroom house and uses location-based settings while away. One buyer said setup stalled partway through in the app before it eventually worked, and a reviewer from Quebec said the display is not especially attractive. Mysa advises hiring an electrician where code requires it or if you are not comfortable with high-voltage wiring.

How we chose

We picked thermostats from established brands with at least 350 ratings on Amazon.ca and a rating of 4.0 stars or higher, sold by Amazon.ca or the brand itself, and covered both forced-air homes and homes with electric baseboards. We left out listings sold only by third-party resellers, including the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) on Oct. 22. We read the listings and a sample of verified reviews from Canada for each. Savings figures are the manufacturers’ own claims and depend on your home, your heating system and your settings. Some provinces and utilities have offered rebates on smart thermostats, so check with yours before you buy.
