How to vote in Charlottetown’s Nov. 2 municipal election

Polls in Charlottetown are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 2, for the city’s municipal election, and voters should bring identification showing their name and address.

Elections P.E.I. is running the vote in Charlottetown, Summerside, Cornwall, Stratford and Three Rivers, CBC News reported. Voters can find their polling location and the list of candidates on the Elections P.E.I. website or by contacting the city.

To be eligible, a person must be a Canadian citizen, be at least 18 years old on election day, have lived on P.E.I. for at least six months and live in the municipality where they are voting. Anyone who is eligible but is not registered can register at their polling location, CBC reported.

Seven candidates are on the ballot for mayor, according to Elections P.E.I.’s list of registered candidates: incumbent Philip Brown, Daniel Cousins, Anthony Fitzpatrick, Daniel Mullen, Ward 4 Coun. Mitchell Tweel, Cecil Villard and Amir Zuccolo.

Three wards have no contest. Justin Muttart (Ward 2), Norman Beck (Ward 3) and John McAleer (Ward 7) are the only registered candidates in their wards.

In Ward 1, the candidates are Sasha Andric, Andrea Battison, Kim Devine and Matt Pelletier. Ward 4 has Ted Kitson, Ryan Mann, Andee Morgan, Kenneth Murnaghan and Rima Rashed. In Ward 5, Kevin Ramsay faces Tazul Riad, and in Ward 6, Doug Currie faces Sue Fraser.

Ward 8 pits Corey Driscoll against Trevor MacKinnon. Ward 9 has four candidates: Kapil Dev Chauhan, Julie McCabe, Jay Patel and Jaime Tinoco. In Ward 10, Terry Bernard faces Ryan Cooke.

The new council is to be sworn in in early December. Results will be posted by Elections P.E.I. once polls close, and we will update this page when official counts are available.

Charlottetown has been in the news this fall for other reasons. Province House reopened after 12 years last month, and the city’s water was named the best in Atlantic Canada.
