Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda has died at 30 after a collision with a goalkeeper during a Spanish second-division match, the club announced Tuesday.
The collision happened in the seventh minute of stoppage time at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with the score tied 2-2 against Andorra, according to Euronews and Goal.
Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono came off his line for a high ball. He tried to kick the ball away and struck De Miguel in the head, according to the reports.
De Miguel was taken off the field on a stretcher and then to hospital. Spanish media reported that he also suffered a cardiac arrest, and that resuscitation restored his heartbeat. His condition appeared to be stabilizing on Monday evening, but Tenerife said Tuesday morning that it had worsened. The club later announced his death.
Owono is a goalkeeper from Equatorial Guinea, born in 2001, who was on loan at Andorra, according to his player profile. Neither the clubs nor the league had published a statement from him as of Tuesday morning.
The league has not announced what will happen to the match result or to Tenerife’s upcoming fixtures. Canada News Media will update this story when LaLiga or the clubs release more information.
De Miguel’s name and Owono’s name both trended in Canada overnight, with more than 20,000 searches each on Google Trends Canada. Tenerife is also a popular winter destination for Canadians, and Air Canada began A321XLR flights to the island in October, as Canada News Media reported.
Neither the club nor the league has published details of the medical response at the stadium.
