Cam Newton admitted his job as quarterback of the New England Patriots will be in jeopardy if he struggles like he did against the San Francisco 49ers.
“The first thing I said to myself coming home was, ‘You keep playing games like that, bro, and it’s going to be a permanent change,'” Newton said Monday morning on Boston sports radio WEEI.
“You don’t need to tell me that for me to understand that. I get it loud and clear.”
Bill Belichick said he’s “absolutely” sticking with Newton as his starter despite giving Jarrett Stidham some reps in the fourth quarter.
“For any type of competitor, do you feel embarrassed? Yeah,” Newton said Monday in the radio interview. “I don’t feel offended by what was done. I don’t feel offended having this type of conversation. I’m a realist.
“I don’t fear my position stability more so than controlling the locker room. Performances like yesterday jeopardizes [that]. It’s like ‘Oh my God!’ Players talk and that’s what’s most important to me. Knowing you have your coaches’ belief [is good], but my belief is that I want to have the whole facility … It doesn’t start with no miraculous play. It’s a whole body of work that goes into performing on Sunday.”

Jaguars fire GM Dave Caldwell following 10th straight loss – Sportsnet.ca
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars fired general manager Dave Caldwell on Sunday after the team’s 10th consecutive loss and sending a clear message that the small-market franchise is headed in a new direction.
It was a move many thought owner Shad Khan should have made at the end of last season. But Khan gave Caldwell another chance to make Jacksonville a playoff contender for just the second time in his eight-year tenure.
Caldwell came up well short of the owner’s winning expectations, making Khan’s decision an easy and somewhat expected one.
Khan will keep coach Doug Marrone and his staff in place to finish out the season and likely let the next general manager decide his fate. It would be stunning to see Marrone return in 2021.
“I’ve met with Dave Caldwell to express my appreciation for his service to the Jacksonville Jaguars as our general manager,” Khan said in a statement that followed the team’s 27-25 loss to Cleveland. “Dave was exceptionally committed and determined to bring a winner to Jacksonville, but unfortunately his efforts were not rewarded with the results our fans deserve and our organization expects.
“Our football operation needs new leadership, and we will have it with a new general manager in 2021.”
The Jaguars are 39-87 since Khan gave Caldwell his first GM job in 2013, falling a few plays shy of the franchise’s first Super Bowl in 2018 and miring mostly in mediocrity since. The Jaguars (1-10) have dropped 16 of their last 19 games, including 11 by double digits.
NFL Rumors: Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Expected to See Snap Increase vs. Seahawks – Sports Illustrated
Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to receive an increase in playing time Monday in Philadelphia’s game vs. the Seahawks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, Hurts has been getting first-team reps at quarterback in practice ahead of the Monday Night Football matchup. Former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz is still expected to start Monday night’s contest for the 3-6-1 Eagles.
Hurts, the No. 53 pick in the 2020 NFL draft, has thrown a pass on just two of his 31 snaps this season. Thus far, he has largely been used as a gadget player in Philadelphia’s offense. The Alabama product has 12 carries for 56 rushing yards on the season and one catch for three yards.
Wentz is the middle of his worst NFL season. He enters Sunday’s action leading the NFL in interceptions (14), sacks taken (40) and fumbles (10). He also ranks 32nd in completion percentage (58.4%) among all qualified quarterbacks.
Kickoff for Monday night’s game is set for 8:15 p.m. ET.
