Is the Surface Pro 12-inch worth it?
The case for it is portability. Microsoft’s listing describes a tablet that weighs about 1.5 pounds, folds out with a 165-degree kickstand and runs full Windows 11, so it can replace a small laptop for notes, email, video calls and streaming. The listing promises up to 15.5 hours of battery life, though Microsoft notes that figure varies significantly with settings and use.
The Snapdragon X2 Plus chip is built around on-device AI work, and the listing says its neural processor is rated at up to 80 TOPS. Microsoft pitches the tablet at everyday tasks such as writing, summarizing and juggling several apps, not heavy video editing or gaming.
The catch is the final bill. The $1,699.99 price covers the tablet alone. The listing says the keyboard, the Surface Slim Pen and the power adapter are sold separately, so a laptop-style setup costs more than the headline price.

What do owners say?
This 12-inch model is new on Amazon.ca and has no customer reviews yet, so there is nothing to quote from its own listing. The closest guide is the previous generation, the 13-inch Surface Pro (11th Edition) with a Snapdragon X Plus chip, which holds 4.4 stars from 358 ratings on Amazon.ca. Those reviews are for a different, larger tablet, so treat them as a hint about the Surface Pro line, not a verdict on this one.
On that listing, 78 per cent of ratings are five stars and 6 per cent are one star. Reviewers praised speed, light weight and a sleek build, and a parent who bought one for a university student called it a lighter option for a backpack. Another buyer praised the battery life and said the tablet stays cool and quiet.
The complaints were consistent. Several reviewers questioned value for money. One said some programs do not run on the Arm-based chip, and another warned buyers not to expect games such as League of Legends to work. A one-star reviewer reported lag on a unit that felt slower than a typical Intel laptop. Those caveats apply to Arm-based Windows tablets in general, so check that your must-have apps support them before you buy.
Surface Pro 12-inch vs MacBook Air 13-inch M5
The obvious rival is Apple’s laptop. The 2026 MacBook Air 13-inch with the M5 chip, 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage is listed on Amazon.ca at $1,789.99, with 4.7 stars from about 1,200 ratings. That is $90 more than the Surface Pro 12-inch, but it has twice the storage and a keyboard built in. The Surface adds a touchscreen and a detachable tablet, but its keyboard is a separate purchase.
For a person who mostly types, the MacBook Air is the simpler buy. For someone who wants to read, sketch or take handwritten notes and carry as little as possible, the Surface fits the job better. Our own look at the laptop is in MacBook Air M5 in Canada: price, specs and whether it is worth it.

Who should skip it
Skip it if you play demanding PC games, rely on older Windows software that has not been updated for Arm chips, or want a full laptop setup at the listed price. Skip it too if you want proof from other owners first, because this model has no reviews yet.

Is there a cheaper alternative?
Within Microsoft’s own range, this 12-inch model is the lower-priced Surface Pro. The step up is the 13-inch Surface Pro (2026) Keyboard and Pen Bundle with 16 GB and 256 GB, which Amazon.ca lists at $2,419.99 and which includes the accessories this tablet leaves out. Older Surface Pro models are listed on Amazon.ca as renewed units from third-party sellers, so we do not link to them.

When is the best time to buy in Canada?
Retailers in Canada have generally run their deepest electronics promotions around Black Friday, Boxing Day and Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days, though discounts on any given model are never guaranteed. Our Black Friday 2026 guide for Canada lists the dates, and we also compare other Apple options in our iPad Pro 11-inch M5 review.

How we researched this: we read the Amazon.ca listings for each product named here, including prices, specifications, seller and star ratings, and read a sample of customer reviews for the previous-generation model. We have not tested any of these products ourselves. Details come from the listings and from Microsoft’s own product description, and prices change often.
