Manitobans are invited to a free evening at Government House in Winnipeg on Tuesday, Nov. 10, where award-winning educator Kelly Hiebert will talk about teaching the Holocaust at the places where it happened, the Office of the Lieutenant-Governor said Tuesday.
The presentation, titled “Standing Where History Happened: Teaching the Holocaust Through Experiential Learning,” is the next event in Lt.-Gov. Anita Neville’s Evenings at Government House series of free public events.
Hiebert founded the Holocaust Memorial Sites Study Tours for Educators. This past summer he led Manitoba’s first such tour, a professional development program meant to strengthen Holocaust education in Canada. According to the release, he will draw on the tour to explore how learning at sites of memory helps teachers engage deeply and responsibly with Holocaust history, and how it builds understanding of the consequences of unchecked hate and antisemitism. He will also discuss helping students think critically, recognize misinformation and champion universal human rights.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m., with light refreshments afterward. Parking is available on both sides of the Government House driveway.
Admission is free, but seating is limited and registration is required by calling the Office of the Lieutenant-Governor at 204-945-2753. Guests may reserve up to two seats per registration. Hats, large bags and backpacks are not permitted. Attendees are asked to consider bringing a non-perishable food item for the Lieutenant-Governor’s Sharing Hope Initiative.
